Brooklyn Snow Day. 24" x 30". Painted in little over 2 hours in oil on found board in the spirit of the Ashcan School style of painting.

The Ashcan School Movement was an early 20th Century American artistic movement portraying daily life in New York City. Using gestural strokes, the Ashcan artists concentrated on the vitality and energy of the growing city teeming with immigrants and new industry.

The Irish Diaspora

The Irish Diaspora consists of all the people who claim Irish descent and reside outside of Ireland. I am grateful to be part of the Irish Diaspora in the United States. The Irish have made significant contributions to this country and many other countries around the world. Large numbers of Irish emigrants and their descendents now reside in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil and states of the Caribbean and continental Europe. Today, 80 million people around the world claim Irish heritage and 41 million of them are in the United States.

Cathartic Experience

What is Catharsis? 

Catharsis is a Greek word meaning ‘cleansing’ or ‘purging’.
 

The purging of emotions or relieving of emotional tension can be accomplished through the practice of art making for many people.  It is the act itself, not the finished work of art that is cathartic for the artist and the image here shows that process.  By drawing a portrait of my recently deceased mother, I am able to experience catharsis.  It is a powerful exercise and I encourage anyone who is experiencing pain brought about by loss or other emotional stress to attempt to release that emotion through art making, writing, composing, or any other creative endeavor. 

Painting with Children

I teach college, but have always enjoyed painting with children.  My granddaughter, daughter, and I painted this elephant on a discarded palm frond.

 Clara is putting the finishing touches on the elephant head before we hang it. We couldn't have done it without her.

Fractals-Just love 'em

What is a fractal?  A fractal is a geometric figure, each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole. A fractal can be split into parts, each of which is a reduced-size copy of the whole. Think of a tree and its branches or a snowflake.  Check out these Buddha Fractals, Wave Fractals and a Fractal Fractal.  They are easy to make at any of the free online fractal generators. Try it yourself!

Images of The Circle Way Installation at The Expressive Arts Institute Gallery in San Diego. Encaustic on canvas. The Circle Way is an expression of  'enlightenment' or the 'ecstatic experience'. Some believe this experience can not be represented or expressed in art or any other way and it is futile to attempt it. I disagree, and The Circle Way is an installation in an immersive space to give the viewers the opportunity to experience for themselves within the space itself.  The Circle Way includes the immersive space, video, music, performance, and large circular canvases in encaustic which is a wax-based medium applied while hot. See the Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890-1985 by Maurice Tuchman for ways artists have tried to depict or express the 'mystical experience'.

Destroyer of Obstacles

Destroyer of Obstacles. Acrylic on canvas. 18"x 24". Ganesha, the elephant-headed god in the Hindu Pantheon, is said to have the elephant's ability to remove obstacles and is besought by his followers before any task to overcome difficulties. This painting is made with only 4 colors, titanium white, cadmium red, cadmium yellow and ultramarine blue acrylic paint.

Reclaimed Materials

Fiddleheads and Poppies. Oil on Canvas. 16" x20". This painting was made from a reclaimed canvas and frame. The textures were achieved by mixing large amounts of linseed oil to the paint and allowing each layer to dry in the sun. Giclée prints can be purchased from the artist.

Kaleidoscope of Death

Kaleidoscope of Death. Digital Print. 20"x20". This piece is the beginning of a series entitled The Skeleton Project. There will be more skeleton related artwork on this site in the coming months. I used simple filters to make changes to a photograph of a skeleton and the free transform tool to create this radial design in Photoshop.

Sustainable Design

Monterey pine table with reclaimed glass table top. 36” x 36”. Pine branches were harvested and allowed to dry in the sun for almost a year. The bark was removed, legs cut and configured to mimic nature. You can see why I need a new studio space. I don’t even have a space to photograph. If you know of a commercial or mixed use building for sale in San Diego County let me know!

Paper Circles. Cut Paper. Hand-made paper. 8"x 10". This piece is all about the Principles of Design. It is a simple arrangement of lines, shapes and patterns to create balance, unity, rhythm and proportion. Is it successful?

Kyoto Street

Kyoto Street. Linoleum cut. Ink on hand-made paper. 8"x10". Kyoto was not firebombed during WWII and as a result is one of the best preserved cities in Japan.

Cut Paper

Cut Paper. Hand-made recycled paper. Each panel is 13"x 37" framed. Paper cutting is a traditional Chinese craft that has existed for thousands of years (later in Japan). These panels are part of a series inspired by the age old tradition. The first panel is Chrysanthemums, first cultivated in China but later adapted by the Japanese Emperor and used as objects of meditation in both China and Japan. The second panel is entitled Eclipse. The third panel, entitled Penrose is made of only two shapes with equal sides to form a Penrose tiling design. The fourth pattern is intended to be ambiguous. It is entitled Faces, but do you see faces or flowers?

Kimono Shop

Kimono Shop.Linoleum cut. Ink on hand-made paper. 8" x 10".Linoleum may not be the traditional way to make a block print, but it is easier to cut and less expensive than wood.

Shinjuku Line. Linoleum cut. Ink on hand-made recycled paper. 16" x 20".Inspired by a trip to Japan while on Sabbatical. Just about all of my artwork since the trip has been influenced by Japanese art and design. I love Superflat, Manga, Woodblock Prints from the 1950s and a whole lot more.
